Vratsa Karst Reserve
The Vratsa Karst Reserve was established in 1983. It includes a karst massif of the Vratsa Mountain (part of Balkan Mountains Range) which spans on an area of 1 409 ha. The region of the Reserve is very rich in caves, abysses, cliffs (up to 450 m) and cave fauna. Now on the territory of the Reserve 43 caves have been registered and certainly the number of the unregistered ones is significant. The most famous caves among the speleologists are: Mechata dupka, Ledenika, Ponora, etc. The Reserve is listed in the registers of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as first category - "scientific and natural reserves". The Vratsa Karst Reserve is included in the indicative list of UNESCO in 1984.
